Backbench Cricket: the back-page paper-and-pen game, now playable online.

bc cover

Description
At school we drew a cricket wheel on the back page of our exercise books in red pen. You turned the paper, closed your eyes and pointed at it, and wherever your finger landed was the ball: a four, a six, a wide, caught. Then you argued about it afterwards. Backbench Cricket brings that game back.

You can play against the computer, pass one phone between two people, or play a friend online by sharing a match code. You choose the number of players and overs, call the toss, and spin the wheel ball by ball while the scorecard keeps track. Both sides get sledged in English (Aussie), Bangla or Hindi, and you can record the Bengali sledges in your own voice, so it sounds like a friend shouting across the classroom.

My role
I came up with the idea and built the game in Python in 2022, including the wheel outcomes, scoring, innings and match flow. Later, I used Claude Code to add the current frontend design and the sledging feature.
